Summer Camp Classes and Activities
Morning Classes:
Warm Up and Stretch: Great option to start the day and get the body ready for dance classes. Children are given exercises for strength and stretching of their muscles. Most of the class is done on a yoga mat. Ballet: Basic barre and center ballet combinations. This class is design for a variety of students of all levels, including beginners. It also serves as a warm up class for the more experienced students that take a second ballet class in the evening.
World Dance: Basic movements from dances from various parts of the globe. Each week we introduce children to one or more forms of folk dance of different regions of the world.
Afternoon Classes:
Dance Library Class: After lunch and recess, students will read about dance, dance history and other themes related to performing arts and the region of the globe related to the dance learned during the World Dance Class each week. The teacher will conduct an activity linking the topics read by the students.
Performing Arts Class: Musical Theatre: This class introduces children to styles of dance commonly found in musicals, often performed to showtunes. Variety Theatre: Students will learn about acting, backdrop making and other theatre related topics. Art with Dance: Students will study a painting or other piece of art and learn a dance related to it. Special Guest Teacher: Tap, Hip hop, Acting, Music and more. Every week we invite a special guest teacher to conduct activities that are not in our regular camp schedule.
Testimonials
"My daughter has participated in summer programs at Urbana Fine Arts Center for the past three years including last summer over Zoom. We both highly recommend them."
"Ms. Luciana Rezende Bagby always offers safe and engaging programs, and kids even learn a little about history and culture over the summer. My daughter has always gone for almost the whole summer, but you can sign up for shorter lengths of time to meet your family's needs. See what works for you and enroll soon!" Celina Trujillo, Urbana, IL
"Our younger daughter attended a few weeks of the camp, and she absolutely loved it. In addition to having regular ballet lessons, she learned some traditional dances from other cultures, which was a nice change. She even performed Tarantella at home for our guests after the Italy week! She made new friends and enjoyed learning about other cultures. It was a great combination of fun and learning. I would highly recommend this camp. The camps' hours are quite flexible, too, which is perfect for the summer. " Valeria Sobol, Urbana, IL
"My daughter loved UFA’s summer camps! She enjoyed how each week was focused on a different country and how each day included time for lessons about the country, dance and creative moment, arts and crafts, and time outside. Luciana and her staff provide a nurturing environment for the campers. As a working mom, I also appreciated the flexibility to add late pick-ups when needed." Christine des Garennes, Urbana, IL
"There are many wonderful summer camps for kids in our community. But if you have the chance this summer, take advantage of those offered at the Urbana Fine Arts Center. Last summer, our 9-year-old and our 7-year-old twins attended a few weeks of the camps and loved every minute! Reluctant to leave at the end of the day, they were even sadder at week's end but cheered up when they knew there was another camp the following week. Miss Luciana offers a little bit of everything in the camps. Each week focuses on a different country and each day there's a mix of dance, language, and culture revolving around that country. After picking up the kids from camp, they are excited to share what they learned and to show us the dances and crafts they worked on. To this day, our children talk about the camp on Africa, remembering the outfits brought in by a parent and performing the dances. One child, mesmerized by the Brazil camp, can still count in Portuguese and whenever we meet someone from Brazil, she shares that information with them and also works on getting invited to have a personal tour of Brazil! Luciana and her assistants are great with the children, engaging them in ways that interest the varying ages of the kids. They are one of the few places to offer full-day camps, but half-day camps are also available in case your children are enrolled in other camps. This summer, have your kids try one out and see what a great addition the Urbana Fine Arts Center summer camps are to our community. The camps are an experience they will truly enjoy!
